The 2011 Wimbledon Championships started on Monday June 20th and in the Women’s Event was the most open competition they have had for years.
The Williams Sisters returned after a long lay-off due to injury but their matches at the Eastbourne International, where neither of them made the Semi Finals, showed they are not back to their old standard yet.
French Open Champion Li Na was seeded No 2 at Eastbourne but was beaten by Daniela Hantuchova in the Quarter Finals in straight sets. Daniela Hantuchova had to retire during her semi-final match at Eastbourne due to an abdominal strain and she said after the match it wasn’t great but she was hoping to be ready for Wimbledon by getting as much treatment as she could.

British fans would dearly love to see Andy Murray win but the 2011 Champion was most likely be from one of the top 3 seeds.
With the Ladies the Champion would be any of the top 8 seeded tennis players although Wozniacki, despite being World Number 1, has never won a Grand Slam Title. The Australian Open Champion Kim Clijsters has had to withdraw from the Championships due to an injured foot.
Serena Williams faced Aravane Rezai in the first round, ranked 56 in the world, while Venus seeded 23 met Akgul Amanmuradova.
British Number 1 Elena Baltacha was up first against a Qualifier while Heather Watson met French player Mathilde Johansson ranked 64 in the world.
The Eastbourne Champion took on a Qualifier but a good first round match promised to be between Francesca Schiavione and Jelena Dokic.
Great Britain already had one lady through to the second round as Naomi Broady had been drawn against Anne Keothavong. Another British player Kate O’Brian faced the veteran Japanese player Kimiko Date-Krumm.
Andy Murray’s first round opponent was Daniel Gimeno-Traver from Spain ranked 56 in the world.
One player tipped to be a dark horse who could have caused an upset is Frenchman Richard Gasquet, 13 in the world and seeded 17. Novak Djokovic faced Frenchman Jeremy Chardy ranked 50 places below him.
Tipsarevic, seeded 23, met Ivo Karlovic in the first round. His opponent was only 14 places below him in the World Rankings so it looked as if this would be an interesting tennis match.
